Browsing Newsgroups with A Social Network Analyzer
نویسندگان
چکیده
Computer-mediated communication (CMC) systems such as Usenet newsgroups, e-mail lists, online chats, etc. facilitate large-scale human interactions and produce large sets of activity records. These datasets can be used to analyze and visualize the social networks exist at the online forums. Such analyses often improve our understanding of online inter-personal interactions, as well as lead to better designs and implementations of CMC systems. We report in this paper our experience in designing a newsgroup browser based on ideas from social network analysis. Our analyzer identifies reciprocal sub-groups in newsgroup discussions, and utilizes visual methods to help users look for leading authors and provocative articles. This is especially helpful for late comers to catch up and participate in popular and noisy newsgroups.

Conversation Map: An Interface for Very Large-Scale Conversations
Very large-scale conversation (VLSC) involves the exchange of thousands of electronic mail (e-mail) messages among hundreds or thousands of people. Usenet newsgroups are good examples (but not the only examples) of online sites where VLSCs take place. To facilitate understanding of the social and semantic structure of VLSCs, two tools from the social sciences—social networks and semantic networ...
متن کاملVery Large Two-Level SOM for the Browsing of Newsgroups
On January 19, 1996 we published in the Internet a demo of how to use Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs) for the organization of large collections of full-text les. Later we added other newsgroups to the demo. It can be found at the address http://websom.hut../websom/. In the present paper we describe the main features of this system, called the WEBSOM, as well as some newer developments of it.
متن کاملChappie Swarm: Persona-Driven Web Corpus Generation
A common issue amongst security researchers is the lack of publicly available network traffic traces. In this paper we present Chappie Swarm, which seeks to emulate human behavior in regard to internet browsing. The experimenter can unleash a number of automated chappies which will assume pre-defined personas, and then actively go out and query websites while simultaneously recording their brow...
متن کاملTopic Trend Detection in Newsgroups
In this paper we report on a project for Corporate Technology of Siemens AG, Munich, which aimed at the use of a social network analysis approach for trend and trend shift detection over time in a technically oriented newsgroup on mobile phones. The analysis was based on the assumption that a trend shift is relevant only if relevant (central) members of the newsgroup initiated this shift. A shi...
متن کاملVisualizing the Signatures of Social Roles in Online Discussion Groups
Social roles in online discussion forums can be described by patterned characteristics of communication between network members which we conceive of as ‘structural signatures.' This paper uses visualization methods to reveal these structural signatures and regression analysis to confirm the relationship between these signatures and their associated roles in Usenet newsgroups. Our analysis focus...
